Report of the General Board on the re-establishment of the Jim Joel Professorship of Equine Reproduction

The GENERAL BOARD beg leave to report to the University as follows:

1. In their Report of 4 October 1995 (Reporter, 1995-96, p. 48), the General Board recommended that a Jim Joel Professorship of Equine Reproduction be established in the University for ten years from 1 October 1995 in the Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine. The full costs of the Professorship were met from a benefaction for this purpose from the Childwick Trustees and the Thoroughbred Breeders' Association. The Report also recommended the appointment to the Professorship of Dr W. R. Allen, who was at that time the Director of the Thoroughbred Breeders' Association Equine Fertility Unit at Newmarket and an Associate Lecturer in the Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine. The recommendations of this Report were approved by Grace 1 of 1 November 1995.

2. Professor Allen heads research in equine reproduction physiology and medicine and is recognized as a leading international expert in this area. His work also encompasses camel reproduction and the control of the elephant population in southern Africa; this is important to both teaching and research in the Veterinary School where the field of animal reproduction is part of the Department of Veterinary Medicine's strategic plan. Accordingly, discussions to secure external funds to support the re-establishment of the Professorship for a further tenure are ongoing. In the meantime, the Faculty Board of Biology have advised the General Board that they accord the highest priority to the re-establishment of the Professorship of Equine Reproduction for Professor Allen for a further two years from 1 October 2005. The Council of the School of the Biological Sciences have endorsed this proposal and non-recurrent funding has been identified to support the re-establishment of the Professorship which would also enable Professor Allen to be included in the Department's submission to the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise.

3. The General Board accordingly recommend the re-establishment of the Professorship of Equine Reproduction for a period of two years from 1 October 2005, and Professor Allen's appointment to it.

4. The General Board recommend:

I. That the Jim Joel Professorship of Equine Reproduction, established by Grace 1 of 1 November 1995, be re-established from 1 October 2005 for a period of two years for Professor W. R. Allen, placed in Schedule B of the Statutes, and assigned to the Department of Veterinary Medicine.

II. That Regulation 1 for the Jim Joel Professorship of Equine Reproduction (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 676) be amended by replacing the words 'ten years from 1 October 1995' by the words 'twelve years from 1 October 1995'.
